Its funny sometimes how people describe others.
I was in a jewelry store in Ruidoso, New Mexico looking at some very exquisite, very expensive turquoise and silver cuff bracelets. Some of the stones were pure turquoise and some of the turquoise was left intact with the host rock creating a beautiful, natural, earth colored stone with a ribbon of turquoise running through it when cut. This was called Ribbon Turquoise. Polished just as turquoise would be if it were cut away from the rock, it is absolutely stunning!
Turquoise has never been my favorite, I love amethysts. It is beautiful, just doesn’t suit me as well as some. Ribbon Turquoise though, I Love It !
As I was admiring this gorgeous silver cuff bracelet with 3 fine stones I told the lady my thoughts on this vs the “plain” turquoise. She, without a moments hesitation explained that this piece indeed was unique and exquisite. She then begins, in a very careful, diplomatic one might say, way searching for just the right words…..hold on, wait for it…to tell me that I must be an earthy girl because of my choice. Now I’m not sure if it was just my choice in jewelry or possibly the earthy green bohemian type outfit I had on plus the fact that my earrings were very simple hoops and my Hebrew inscribed ring is not too bling. Anyway, she proceeds to tell me that most “shiny ” girls prefer the regular polished turquoise. I did not take offense to this mostly because as I was laughing I told her I supposed I could be a shiny girl if I needed or wanted to be. I was assuming she meant “shiny” girls are ones that get dressed up and wear a lot of bling. She was right however in her assumption that I am mostly an earthy girl! Plus she was just such a sweet, vibrant, very “shiny” little lady!
This got me to thinking….
There is nothing whatsoever wrong in being a “shiny” girl, an “earthy” girl or somewhere in betwixt. We compliment each other making the world a more interesting, beautiful place.
What it really got me to thinking is that I do want to be a “shiny” girl all the time but not shining with rocks precious or semi precious. No, I want to shine with my favorite Rock, the Rock that shines in and through me and that is Jesus Christ Himself!
He is the rock of our salvation, He is the rock of our strength, He is the rock on which we stand…wow, that’s more than any shiny rock we could ever buy can do for us!
He will not only cause us to shine on the outside as those sparkly stones do but He will shine through us as well, lighting up not only our lives but that light will cast itself upon the world around us with a light that shines eternally! Our shiny jewels can’t make a change in peoples lives, they can’t bring everlasting joy and fulfillment but Jesus can!!!
The fabulous, exciting thing about this is it doesn’t cost us a dime. Light eternal, the greatest bling of all, shine that can go with us everywhere….all we have to do is ask Jesus into our lives!
Now I said it doesn’t cost us a dime and that’s correct but we do have our responsibility in keeping that “shine” the light of Jesus in our lives. Just as the stones and the metals in which they are set have to be maintained we have to maintain our relationship with Christ. To keep our jewels sparkling we have to soak and polish them. We must too soak in the word Of Christ, we must not neglect His teachings. We must prioritize our time with Him. We must start each day with a polishing, praying off all that does not reflect who we are in and through Jesus. We must thank him, praise him, rejoice in him, ask him each morning to renew himself in us. If we do this each day we cannot help but to shine, we can’t help but to let others see the exquisite nature of Christ, the beauty of who He is, who we are in Him!
I may not be a “shiny” girl in the sense of worldly things but my prayer each day will be that when I shine the greatest its because I’m filled with the love and light of Jesus the most precious rock one could ever discover.
My prayer is the same for you!
