noun: A single distinct meaningful element of speech or writing used with others (or sometimes alone) to form a sentence in which a message can be conveyed.
According to Urban Dictionary “word” is the shortened form of the phrase “my word is my bond” originated by inmates in the U.S. prisons. It was first shortened to “word is bond” before becoming “word” meaning “truth” or “to speak the truth”.
“Word?” (You speak the truth)
“Word”. (I speak the truth)
I’m not sure how relevant the urban definition is today or if the people using it had any idea this was the reason behind it but I thought it was interesting as it was quite the term for a few years even though I had no idea what it meant when people said ‘word’ and I’m not sure they even knew.
What is my fascination with “word” ? I’d love to tell you, I hope you’re interested in hearing!
With all the words we share on a daily basis, with all the promises that are made whether by political candidates, our family, friends or colleagues, it got me to thinking not only about the words that we speak but the meaning of the word…word!
We hear through various sources both Christian and secular that our words hold great meaning. That through our words we can speak life or death. It is very true. Say something positive and see a face light up, say something negative and you can almost see a dark cloud move in over someone. People have literally lived or died because of words!
There was a time when a man could give his “word” and it was as good as gold. A handshake and a word could seal a deal and never would there have been thought of going back on that word. With what is going on in our nation right now, I believe we are all hyper-sensitive to words being spoken over our country, over our lives, corporately and independently. There is much hatred, there is much despair. If we listen to the networks or get on any type of social media we are given a doom and gloom message at the moment and many are falling for it.
Why? I believe its because people have lost sight of the only true source of life and hope that no earthly words even the greatest scholar could use, can convey. People are relying on the words of those who have either placed themselves or been placed by others in a position or a platform of authority to give us the answers, to save us so to speak. We too often take someone at their word in our own day to day lives only to be disappointed or betrayed. I’m not saying we don’t need government or representation in certain areas of life, I’m not saying we can never trust those who give us their word, what I’m saying is we are putting too much hope, too much faith in the words of man! We have taken the true Word out of too many areas of our lives. We are not seeking, studying, relying on the very Word that can save us, obliterate our fears, bring us hope , love, life, truth! We need to be cautious, wary of the words planted into our hearts and minds. We need to make sure that Jesus, the true Word is planted first and foremost in our hearts and minds. That the message we convey is a reflection of Him. That the message we receive is the message of Him.
Words do communicate a message… the “WORD,” Jesus Christ, is the message!
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God….. vs.14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father full of grace and truth.
In Psalm 119:105 we read “Your Word is a lamp unto my feet, a light upon my path“. “Word,” it’s not just a word it is the living Jesus, our light, our hope, our promise, directly guiding us. Isn’t that what words do, they direct us in any given direction depending on what they are, how they are used. How much greater would our lives be if we allowed ourselves to be completely directed by the “Word” Jesus Christ.
Long before Webster’s dictionary, long before Urban dictionary, the Word was defined, the Word was personified, the Word brought a message that lives even today. The Word reigns even today. The power of the Word is sovereign still! There is life in the Word.
With all the hollow, divisive, destructive words we hear at any given time, though it may affect our earthly lives in a direct or indirect way we can rejoice that our Eternal lives will not be affected adversely even in the slightest if we accept the true Word.
WE can ask “WORD?” (You speak the truth)
JESUS answers “WORD”. ( I speak the truth…I am the Truth)
John 14:6 Jesus said, “I am the way the truth and the life…”
It seems strange to me that a bunch of inmates shortened a phrase to “word” to mean my word is my bond. It seems strange to me that this would be a way God would speak mightily to me about what the word “Word” really means in my life. That the Word that is our bond is Jesus, never failing, always true. With this knowledge I pray we can live in this more abundantly. I pray that we will learn to rely on the message the Word brings to us. I pray that there will be healing and wholeness because we speak the Word over ourselves, over others! We don’t have to live in fear or despair, Hallelujah!!
I don’t think it’s going to become habit for me to respond to others with “word” in response to any dealings but it has been interesting delving into this subject a bit from an earthly perspective. I will however strive to become more habitual in sharing the Word, the most important, life giving, life saving word we will ever speak, the only one that can help us not only see from a Heavenly perspective, but ensures Eternal Life! This bond, this truth, this Word is the most vital, life changing one that will ever pass through our lips!
My definition of “Word” ( Jesus Christ) –
The Single, Distinct Living Bond that gives Love, Life, Hope, Joy,Eternity, The Truth!
