Have you ever wondered what your purpose is? Not just what you should do with your life, but that one thing that God intended for you to accomplish on this earth? I have to admit that for me, the thought was overwhelming at times! However, God has been faithful in giving me the answer to this question and He can reveal to you your kingdom purpose as well.
First, you need to begin by understanding that you can’t live out your true kingdom purpose without first establishing and knowing your identity.
Lauren wrote a beautiful article recently regarding this very subject titled “Your True Identity”. I encourage you to read it! It is full of truth and sets a foundation for discovering your purpose. However, before I dive into our purpose, I’d like to also talk for a moment about our identity.
God desires to adopt us into His family and to give us a new nature, the same moral nature of His Son. When you become a true Christian by receiving Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, you also receive a new identity. As a child of God, your old sin nature has been exchanged for a glorious new nature. The Bible reveals that you receive a new identity in Christ! It’s important to understand that you cannot discover your kingdom purpose apart from Christ.
“You are all sons (and daughters) of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:26
I have personally studied genealogy charts tracing my roots to determine my family lineage, taken personality tests to discover my temperament and natural tendencies, and even spiritual gift tests to discover my greatest spiritual strengths. These have all been helpful in discovering who I am on this earth and how God wired me. However it wasn’t until recently that I began to understand that my God, who formed my heart, and fashioned my life, is the only One who knows the true me! So I asked Him to show me my purpose and He was faithful in answering me!
“For we are God’s’ masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago” Ephesians 2:10
It’s no secret that we have each been created with different personalities, natural abilities, and spiritual gifts. Along with different experiences, knowledge, and opportunities, each of these things contribute to our individual purpose. God revealed to me that my special purpose is to simply encourage and teach. I have had countless opportunities throughout the many seasons of my life as a student, cashier, mom, coach, teacher, friend, and so on, to encourage and teach those God brought into my life. For you, it will be different. I know many who have discovered their purposes. One friend found that his was to become a doctor, another was called into missions, one to start a church, many to be prayer warriors, and another to lead worship. As we discover our purpose we also experience a wonderful freedom. We become free from comparing ourselves to one another and freedom from the pressure to do something you were not created to do. God knows the true you and He desires to reveal to you your purpose! I encourage you to pray and ask Him to show you. I’m confident He will!
“For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.” Philippians 2:13
He will give you your kingdom purpose when you stop looking for it in the world. You can’t discover it apart from Him! Life becomes enjoyable when we love God and participate in what He’s doing. Many have simply added Him to their world instead of making Him their world. It’s important to understand that living out your purpose is not inviting God to join in what you’re doing, it’s about joining your life to what God is doing. The cause for all of us, the one thing we must be, is absolutely and wildly devoted to the cause of Christ.
The center of our purpose is the same for all believers. Jesus Christ. As each of us live out our purpose with an attitude of ushering in the kingdom culture here on earth and loving one another, we bring glory to God. As we discover and follow His purpose for our lives, we are not only participating in what God is doing but we are also able to experience true and lasting joy.
That my friends is true purpose!
